10 Amazing Things to Do in Abu Dhabi (My 2025 Travel Story)

The scent of sandalwood drifted through the air as I stepped into the golden morning haze, the call to prayer echoing softly, and the marble beneath my feet cool and smooth. While some cities are simply destinations, Abu Dhabi revealed itself to me like a treasure map, each experience uncovering a new layer of wonder.

In 2025, I finally set foot in Abu Dhabi, a city that had long lived in my imagination. I pictured glittering hotels, sprawling malls, and the relentless desert sun, expecting to be dazzled by luxury alone. Secretly, I hoped the city would awaken a sense of wonder and possibility in me, but I wondered if it could truly move me beyond the surface glamour. Abu Dhabi, I soon discovered, had surprises waiting that would challenge every assumption I brought with me.

But what I found in Abu Dhabi went far beyond my expectations, and with each new experience, the city’s vibrant character unfolded before me.

The city blended ancient culture, golden desert vistas, gleaming skyscrapers, and a gentle Arabian allure. One day, I stood in awe beneath the world’s most breathtaking mosque. The marble shimmered in the growing sunlight. The space felt timeless, endless. Next, I lost myself in an art museum crowned by a shimmering silver dome. Sudden. Modern. Unpredictable. Each sunrise promised a fresh adventure.

If Abu Dhabi is on your radar, whether you crave cultural treasures, thrilling adventures, or fun for the whole family, let me share 10 unforgettable things to do in Abu Dhabi experiences from the journey that I believe will capture your heart, too.

Lose Yourself in Awe at the Majestic Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

On my very first morning, I found myself standing before the breathtaking Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Its sheer scale and beauty left me completely unprepared.

The mosque seemed to belong to another world entirely.
Sunlight danced on white marble, domes soared above the city, and delicate floral mosaics unfurled across the vast courtyards.

Inside, I wandered over the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet, gazing up at Swarovski chandeliers that glittered like constellations suspended in the night. (Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, 2024)

Despite the desert heat outside, the marble beneath my feet remained refreshingly cool.

It’s more than just a landmark; it’s the spiritual and architectural heart of Abu Dhabi.

Explore World Art at Louvre Abu Dhabi

Stepping into Louvre Abu Dhabi, imagined by visionary architect Jean Nouvel, became a highlight of my adventure. The museum itself feels like a floating dream, a work of art in its own right.

From afar, its vast silver dome appears to float above the sea. Step inside, and sunlight pours through thousands of geometric cutouts, casting a magical ‘rain of light’ all around you.

It stands among the most extraordinary museums I have ever explored. (Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, 2025) Rated the Best Things to Do in Abu Dhabi

This waterfront is ideal for evening strolls, cycling, or simply enjoying the view. Abu Dhabi is surrounded by hundreds of islands and beaches. The public shores are pristine, thoughtfully designed, and breathtakingly beautiful. For powdery white sand and sparkling turquoise water, Saadiyat Beach is one of the best spots.

Experience a Safari at Sir Bani Yas Island

The biggest surprise of my Abu Dhabi trip was Sir Bani Yas Island. I signed up for a wildlife safari expecting a short drive through desert landscapes, similar to a Zoo, maybe spotting a few animals along the way. But what I experienced was very different.

As our jeep rolled deeper into the island, the scenery began to feel less like the Arabian Gulf and more like the African savannah. Herds of gazelles moved across the open land, and suddenly a tall giraffe appeared, calmly walking through the trees. For a moment, it genuinely felt as if I were in Serengeti.

Sir Bani Yas Island is home to the Arabian Wildlife Park, a vast protected sanctuary where animals roam freely across the landscape. The park is home to 17,000 free-roaming animals, which include antelope, cheetahs, ostriches, and hyenas. During our jeep safari, we also spotted a few rarer species quietly grazing in the wild. It was amazing to see African wildlife thriving in the middle of the Arabian Gulf, which felt surreal, one of those travel moments that completely catches you off guard and stays with you long after the journey ends. Visit the Grand Emirates Palace

If Abu Dhabi ever had a palace fit for royalty yet welcoming to all, it would be the Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental. The property unfolds across a kilometre of private beach, adorned with more than 100 domes and over 1,000 chandeliers.

Even if you are not a guest, stopping by for coffee or dinner is a treat, and yes, you can savour their legendary gold-flaked cappuccino. Rated the Best Things to Do in Abu Dhabi

Watch the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas

For motorsport enthusiasts like me, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit was unforgettable. Engines roared into darkness, racing beneath golden floodlights as the city shimmers in the distance.

The ambience crackled with anticipation, and every lap was more thrilling than the last. Ferrari World Abu Dhabi is home to the world’s fastest roller coaster, Formula Rossa.

Venture Into the Empty Quarter

Visiting the Rub’ al Khali was one of the most unforgettable chapters of my journey. After days spent in Abu Dhabi’s hum of cafés and glass towers, the transition was almost startling. One moment, I was engulfed by the rush of traffic and city hustle; the next, the world fell away, replaced by endless dunes. Silence made me realise that the isolation was deep, as if the desert swallowed sound and time. I realised true silence for the first time. The wind, the sun-baked sand, and my pulse threading through the emptiness. This is the largest sea of sand on Earth, stretching across the UAE, Oman,  Saudi Arabia, and Yemen. (Editors, 2025)

You can enjoy:-

  • Dune bashing
  • Camel trekking
  • Falconry shows
  • Desert camping

Yet the true magic begins after sunset.

With city lights far away, the desert sky bursts into a tapestry of stars.

Discover the Oasis City of Al Ain

About 90 minutes from Abu Dhabi lies Al Ain, known as the Garden City of the UAE.

Al Ain exudes a tranquil, timeless spirit that stands in stark contrast to Abu Dhabi’s skyline.

You can enjoy your visit  to Al Ain Oasis, Al Jahili Fort and the lively camel market

Strolling beneath the cool shade of palm groves, I felt transported to another era. Rated the Best Things to Do in Abu Dhabi

Enjoy a Free Movie at Cinema Space

Cinema Space was one of the trip’s most delightful experiences. As a film lover, one should arrive about 45 minutes early to grab the best comfy bean bag seats near the screen, and don’t forget to bring a light jacket, as the evening sea breeze can turn surprisingly cool. Little touches like these turned the free movie night into a must-do experience.

Located in the Saadiyat Cultural District, this venue hosts free movie nights featuring world cinema, Emirati films, documentaries, and classics.

Watching a film outdoors beneath the Arabian sky, with the sea breeze whispering by, became an experience I will never forget. It was my last evening, and my journey drew to a close, I found myself at Saadiyat Island.

The sun slipped gently into the Arabian Gulf, painting the sky with strokes of orange and pink.

This was the excellent finale to an unforgettable trip to Abu Dhabi. Rated the Best Things to Do in Abu Dhabi

Final Thoughts

My 2025 adventure in Abu Dhabi changed how I saw the UAE.

It’s not just about skyscrapers and fancy hotels. It is a city where old traditions and new ideas come together. You can visit a world-class museum in the morning, explore a desert older than civilisation in the afternoon, and watch a Formula 1 race at night. If you are craving for an international trip, make sure Abu Dhabi is in your itinerary. Start picturing your own travel story, and let Abu Dhabi surprise you.
